Obesity – a double burden

Obesity is generally caused because of eating too much and moving too little. Obesity is a serious choric disease which has many negative effects.

“People who died of starvation are not nearly as pitiful as those who died of overeating.”

Obesity is a complex disorder which involves an excessive amount of body fat. There are few symptoms through which obesity can be identified.

Symptoms

Obesity can be identified when your body mass index (BMI) is 30 or higher. Your body mass index is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms and height by meters.

        Below 18.5  Underweight 
        18.5- 24.9    Normal
        25.0-29.9    Overweight
      30.0 – 34.9   Obese (class 1)
      35.0-39.9  Obese (class 2)
      40.0 and higher Extreme obesity (class 3)

Causes of Obesity 

Obesity occurs when you intake food with more calories and you don’t burn them through exercise then there occurs the risk. Calories are to be burnt with some exercise and normal activities.

These disorders are and there are two main principles of obesity. They are 

•    Inactivity 

•    Unhealthy diet and eating habits 

Both inactivity and unhealthy diet is the main cause of obesity. If you are not very active then you don’t burn calories. Weight gain can be solved if you regularly eat and burn calories.

Obesity results in some risk factors and they are

•    Genes may affect the number of body fats that are stored and the fats that are distributed. Genetics play a vital role in converting food into energy.

•    Obesity tends to have high risk in family issues. If one or both of them in a family is having obese then it means that the children tend to have a high risk of obese which is not just because of genetics.

“Some people when they see cheese, chocolate or cake they don’t think of calories.”

•    For some people, obesity is caused due to medical issues. Medical problems like arthritis lead to decreased activity that result in weight gain.

•    It can occur because of social and economic issues. Avoiding obesity is difficult if there are no safe areas of exercise.

•    Age is one main reason as obesity can occur at any age, even young children’s can be affected by obesity.

•    During pregnancy period there is a high chance to get affected by obesity as the weight of women gets increased during pregnancy.

•    When you quit smoking then there are chances of obesity. But quitting smoking is a very good decision to health 

•    Not getting enough sleep or getting too much of sleep can cause changes in hormones and can increase appetite. You get to crave for foods with high calories and carbohydrates which lead to weight gain.

“You know that you are getting fat when your thighs start rubbing together when walking.”

Ways to prevent obesity

If you feel overweight then there are few steps to follow to prevent them.

•    Exercise is a very basic and essential thing when we talk about weight gain.

•    Follow a healthy diet plan focusing on foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Avoid eating saturated fats, sweets and alcohol.

•    Avoid those foods which cause weight gain and monitor your weight regularly.

•    Don’t skip your diet plan stick to it and maybe you can skip it occasionally but not often.

When you’re obese you diminish the overall quality of life. You feel like you’re not able to do things which you usually do and you avoid public places and you feel like your discriminated.
